Newly renovated, this luxurious room is very sophisticated. ​ Guest Room Seven is a very masculine looking room with full draperies and cornices – but is often a favorite of our women guests who describe it as “uniquely romantic.” The paneled walls (original to the house) are faux-finished a deep gold-brown and then glazed with a burnt umber finish. Decorated in bamboo, rattan, and with accessories and artwork from the Amazon River Basin, Guest Room Seven is very exotic and romantic. It could be described as a cross between “Out of Africa,” Key West, and the Orient Express. The headboard on the king size bed was designed by the innkeeper. The art includes framed fabric, antique ducks, oars, Kenyan baskets, and unique seashells. The slipper chairs have been upholstered in stunning yellow with leather trim, and brilliant blue. Note the perfect Art Deco table between the two chairs. The wallpaper, called Orange Grove, brings green and orange into the terra-cotta colored bathroom, which also features marble vanity, marble floor, and a garden-sized soaking tub. From the bathtub, there is a wonderful view of rooftops and chimneys. Don’t miss the leopard print carpet. This third floor guest room is just steps from access to the cupola – the highest residential point in the city – with an intimate seating area and 360-degree view of historic Wilmington. This amazing room is the grandest, largest, and most elegant. ​ One of the largest rooms, number Four, is approximately 20’ x 20’ for 400 sq ft of pure luxury, has stunning sculpted carpet, a king size bed, and a gorgeous antique armoire. The two Eastlake chairs, settee, and writing desk make this a comfortable room to relax, catch up on correspondence, or enjoy a glass of complimentary port. The elaborate window treatments and bed canopy are a dramatic red fabric from J. Wang. The desk is under a window and overlooks a live oak. The hand-carved wooden Italian chandelier, with a dimmer, provides diffused lighting. This room has 10-1/2 foot ceilings. The upholstery on the chairs was custom designed so that the emblems are centered on the seat and back. The settee and antique chair are upholstered in black and cream herringbone fabric, and the antique lamps provide soft lighting. The original artwork above the King bed was done by a local Wilmington artist, and other pieces include an original John Zimmerman, and an unusual print of a crow. On the wall by the settee, you will find one of a series of 20 paintings done for the Corcoran Art Museum by an artist who was an engraver at the U.S. Treasury. The beautiful gold and black check butterfly fabric of the drapes and valances will take your breath away. Guests are welcome to use the Empire dresser with its gorgeous tiger maple drawers. The en suite bathroom has stunning Oriental-themed crane wallpaper, marble floor and vanity, and a luxurious garden-size soaking tub. The House The Renovation Of A Historic Gem Honoring Chuck, Verandas Previous Innkeeper Originally built in 1853 by Benjamin Beery, the structure of The Verandas mansion suffered extensive fires and water damage in 1992. Boarded up and decaying, the mansion was purchased by previous owner Chuck Pennington, with his late partner, in May 1995. The vision was to transform the abandoned and deteriorating historic property into a bed and breakfast inn that offered a gracious vision into the beauty of antebellum Wilmington North Carolina. After extensive demolition, including the removal of more than 80,000 pounds of plaster, 10,000 pounds of radiators, and more than 20 dump trucks of debris, the entire house was stripped down to the studs. A completely new infrastructure was then created for the house. This included new wiring, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, insulation, and walls. A sprinkler system and emergency lighting systems were added to ensure the ultimate safety of guests. After more than a year of complete renovation, the mansion was professionally decorated to provide a professional business atmosphere for the sophisticated executive as well as to provide a comfortable weekend retreat for tourists. English and American antiques as well as traditional furniture were selected to achieve this goal. The Verandas Bed and Breakfast Inn welcomes a continual influx of guest who want to experience true southern hospitality, but it is also a home. A fanatic collector of antiques, art, and period furnishings, previous innkeeper Chuck Pennington decorated all the guest rooms with items as such. Water everywhere. And wind whistling through the front doors. Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on our beautiful historic house. The Cat 1 storm that hit Wilmington on Sept 14, destroyed one of the home’s immense chimneys, creating a roof cave-in and causing extensive damage to the interior of the home. The front doors were blown in by the storm, which compounded the internal wind and rain destruction. We also lost a centuries old oak tree in the back yard, ripping up the rear brick stairs and wide brick veranda off the dining room, and tearing apart the sunroom. A week later, a short in the water-logged cove lighting in our gourmet kitchen caused an early-morning fire and extensive damage, which was barely extinguished by our post-Florence malfunctioning sprinkler system. The artwork over the decorative fireplace is hand-blocked print from a contemporary artist in California. The desk is under a window, next to the decorative fireplace. The colors of the rooms are burgundy, blues and deep greens. The bathroom is a subtle, restful spa feeling, with muted wallpaper, marble finishes, and a garden size soaking tub.
